Fun or miserable
This week's topic for discussion is wet weather, specifically: How do your dogs react to the rain, and do you do anything before or after walks to make the experience more pleasant for your pooch and yourself? Do your dogs enjoy walks in the rain? Do you bother cleaning them up and drying them off, or do you just let nature work its magic? Do they have a covered space outside to dry off, or do you let them in the house? Do you use raincoats? Rubber booties? Reply to this post and help a fellow dog owner out.
Here's Homer: Half Chesapeake, half otter
Last week's theme was dogs exercising, and there were a couple great shots. My favorite is this picture of Homer, whose owner Lars Tulip describes him as half Chesapeake Bay Retriever and half otter. You can clearly see both breeds in action in this shot from Crystal Lake.
Speaking of action, this week marked the return of adrenaline junkies Shadow and Siopao. Owner Steve Kreinbrink captured Shadow poised to "attack" his sister Siopao as she was swimming in the lake. Shadow, you be nice!
Chip struts his stuff at an AKC dog show in Fairbanks
Off topic but equally adorable were a couple shots of Tim O'Brien's Alaskabred Shetland Sheepdogs McKenzie and Carson. Here's a portrait of McKenzie taken in the yard. A gorgeous pooch.
And as gorgeous pooches go, you can't get much better looking than this shot of Chip shown strutting his stuff at the AKC dog show in Fairbanks over Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for submitting it, Gary.
Wet dogs. Show us your pooch on a rainday walk, a dip in a lake or even fresh out of the tub.
For contest purposes, the cutoff will be Monday after the first update of the gallery.
It wasn't very long, 5 pages, and set up for easy reading. I'm glad I read it. It's full of explanations about how people communicate on the internet (and, of course then, how we communicate here on the Dog Blog) and has excellent suggestions on how we can do a better job of communicating. We all want to be understood better and write better, at least I do. So if any of you can spare a few moments to go there and maybe print it out, it won't be a waste of time. I really learned a lot.
Also, just want to say how much I am enjoying the wonderful dog photos. Terrific!
Would you trust someone your dog doesn't know to walk him while you're out of town?
I have a good friend who I trust personally, but he has no real relationship with my Yorkies and has never owned little dogs. He's offered to walk them for the two weeks while we're in Hawaii, but I have no idea how they'd react. If they get stressed, will he realize it? Will they run away if he lets them off leash? Will he know which dogs that they run into at the park are aggressive and which ones just wanna play?
I'm running out of time, and I'm not sure if I have time to do a test walk. What do you think? Am I stressing for nothing? My mother in law is housesitting,Ugg Canada, so my alternative is to let her give them the run of the backyard for exercise.
I would allow your friend to walk your dogs for their exercise. I would give him as much information about your regular routine and ideas for adaptation so that he can find something comfortable for him, yet still familiar for your dogs. Personally, I would have to go with a onleashallthetime rule, but encourage him to play with them in your fenced yard before or after the walk.
And I think you need to stop thinking "little dog." Just think "dog." I have never owned little dogs, but my friends know that I have doggie knowledge and they trust me with their dogs.
My Yorkies do pretty darn well in the snow. By the third week of winter, they head outside for our daily walks as eagerly as they do in the summer. But rainy days are another story. They turn into couch potatoes.
I don't know if it's the cold or the wet, but I can't get them to enjoy walks in the rain. I've tried raincoats. They keep them drier, but the dogs hate wearing them. I even ordered a set of $17 "rubber dog booties." I was sent 10 balloons that fell off the moment their feet touched ground.

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Railway police have adopted measures to ensure a smooth and safe journey for Chinese travellers during China's holiday travel rush, the largest annual human migration on earth, which began on Thursday.
About 3.62 billion trips will be made across China during the 40-day travel rush around the Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar new year, which falls on Jan. 31. Nearly 258 million Chinese are expected to travel by rail during the period.
Railway police have reinforced crackdowns on train ticket scalping. They have strengthened patrols at train stations and ticket offices and will pay special attention to suspicious group ticket purchasers, according to a statement from the railway police authorities.
