Another story, involving the maverick conductor, Valery Gergiev, who recorded the Chopin with Thibaudet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, but cancelled the preceding live performances: "The orchestra said we have somebody Markus Stenz. I didn't know him. He arrived. We had a great rehearsal in the morning and did the performance that evening. It was one of the most wonderful performances of the concerto. It was as if we had played it together all our lives." Thibaudet first came to this city in 1986 to perform in the first Melbourne Festival, Gian Carlo Menotti's Spoleto. He has returned at least six times, but this is his debut with the MSO. Thibaudet is wearing a red jacket, cream trousers and a beguiling pair of Louis Vuitton shoes. He is in his early 40s, and is one of the most successful pianists of his generation. His repertoire includes the popular classics,[url=http://www.floware.fr]michael kors paris[/url], chamber music and recital pieces, but extends to Duke Ellington and Bill Evans on the one side, and that firstclass eccentric French composer, Erik Satie, on the other. But we are talking about Gershwin and Chopin. He first performed Rhapsody in Blue when he was 15. "It was pretty straightforward. I looked at the score and just played it. I didn't know about jazz then," he said. Now he does, and the performance is different, freer and more lively. "The Chopin is one those pieces you can never get tired of. It can be so different: happy one evening, melancholic the next. You can't think of the piano without Chopin. He's our daily bread." The second concerto is, he says, almost operatic "The bel canto of the piano; the Bellini of the piano. Chopin makes it sing." Thibaudet is passionate about singers, and has accompanied such fine artists as Brigitte Fassbaender, Renee Fleming and Cecilia Bartoli. "I have been blessed," he says. "I have learnt things you can't learn from the piano breathing, phrasing, legato. You have to breathe with the singer. Once you've done that, it stays with you. The technique makes you see the music differently. It should be obligatory for a pianist to work with singers; you can't be a true musician without it." Thibaudet, who divides his time between Paris and Los Angeles, is always on the move, as musicians tend to be. In spite of beginning his musical studies at five, first public appearance at seven, and entering the Paris Conservatoire at 12, his formative years were not dominated by the piano. "My father made me continue all my general studies as well as the piano, just in case the music didn't work," he says. "So I'm quite normal for someone who started so young. I went to school, I had friends." He would rather have liked to have been a lawyer, a diplomat or a vet. Not a doctor: "I'm not very good with blood". The piano won out to our advantage as well as his. "It is really the king of instruments," he says. "You have an entire orchestra in your hands."
